Neonatal Clinical Deterioration Training for Community Settings and GP Clinics

NeoPro Primary Care workshops and courses to suit all experience levels and professional needs:

  • NeoPro Primary Care Half Day Workshop

    • Participants will learn recognition and management of the deteriorating neonate and common neonatal conditions, in addition to dedicated 2 hours of neonatal resuscitation and neonatal emergencies, including IV access, outside of the hospital setting

    • Program includes pre-reading, professional workbook and fully interactive, hands on, in-person workshop

  • NeoPro Primary Care Full Day Program 

    • Full day session covering all aspects of our half day program, with a more in-depth coverage of neonatal conditions, prematurity, conditions that impact neonates and considerations for babies on home oxygen or long-term nasogastric feeds

High Dependency and Complex Care

Neonatal High Dependency and Complex Care Training 

Neonatal complex care and high dependency training for hospital settings. Suitable for nurses or midwives looking to expand their neonatal knowledge and upskill to CPAP, Hi-Flow and complex neonatal needs. Also suitable as a refresher course for nurses and midwives in complex neonatal conditions and care, or for doctors and medical students seeking further knowledge and extended training in complex neonatal care.

  • Topics include:

    • Refresh of neonatal respiratory and cardiac physiology​

    • Mechanics of and need for CPAP, and Hi-Flow, set-up of equipment, management of neonates on respiratory support and clinical considerations, skin integrity, secretions, orogastric tubes, troubleshooting when the bubble stops and documentation requirements

    • Intubation, airway support and advanced respiratory interventions - how to manage and stabilise the neonate for transfer to higher care facilities - preparation for neonatal transport teams

    • Blood tests, and values for the compromised neonate

    • Management of Intravenous lines, including fluid requirements and calculations, taping of IV's at cannula insertion, ongoing management and care

    • Medications used in complex neonatal care

    • Nutrition considerations for neonates with respiratory support

    • Managing the daily care of the neonate on respiratory support, and when to escalate condition

  • Course delivered as a half day in-person and fully interactive workshop with opportunity for hands on practice, scenarios and group activities.

Special Care Nursery 

Neonatal Training in Special Care Nursery for those who are new to neonatal nursing, or those who wish to return to the specialty and refresh knowledge, so that you can enter the SCN feeling confident, safe and ready to care for babies and their families

Suitable for nurses, nursing and medical students, and contextualised to the audience

  • Topics include:

    • Neonatal feeding - nasogastric tube insertion and management, bottle feeding techniques, breastfeeding, expressing and feeding volume requirements

    • Basic Intravenous line management, and assistance with taping of IV lines at insertion

    • Monitoring and observation requirements

    • Daily routines in the SCN - safety checks and routines, time management, medications, isolette care and temperature management, infection control and general workplace considerations 

    • Neonatal baby checks and what to look for

    • Management of hypoglycaemia and contributing factors

    • Common and uncommon conditions and management - jaundice and phototherapy, sepsis, skin conditions, gastrointestinal conditions, poor feeding, withdrawal, TTN/Respiratory distress, cleft lip and palate, congenital conditions, small or large for gestational age, birth trauma, seizures

    • ​Prematurity - terminology, care of the premature neonate, feeding considerations for the premature infant, temperature management, blood sugar management, short- and long-term implications, developmental care

Neonatal Resuscitation Training delivered by SL Training Centre provides professional neonatal resuscitation practical training in your workplace Australia wide, at one of our SL Training Centre locations (Melbourne only), or Australia wide at various locations by arrangement. Includes pre-reading and a 2-hour in-person workshop.

Certificate of completion awarded upon successful resuscitation practical assessment.

  • ​Neonatal debrief session - an opportunity for structured debrief, and an hour of de-identified scenarios for learning experience of what can go wrong, incidents or simply to talk to and hear from other nurses, nursing students and those in neonatal care who understand the complexities of our role, in a safe and confidential environment, delivered by an experienced of neonatal nurse of more than 22 years with postgraduate qualifications in psychology and many experiences to draw from. Please note this session is not therapy, or professional counselling - it is merely an opportunity to open up if you feel comfortable, or simply listen if you don't. (only available live)
